OSTKREUZ Exhibitions

For more than 30 years, OSTKREUZ creates and develops photography exhibitions. The agency’s photographers work worldwide on topics of social relevance. Their pictures are shown in museums, galleries and institutions in Germany and internationally. Also, they appear in numerous art collections.

Our exhibitions can be rented and presented by you. In addition, we can create and curate presentations that are specifically adapted to your exhibition venue – using pieces from the OSTKREUZ agency’s storied image archive.

The spectrum of exhibition topics ranges from the social sea change in Germany before and after the fall of the Berlin Wall to current issues concerning youth, Europe, war and migration.

OSTKREUZ stands for a visual language rooted in documentary photography and for fostering auteur approaches.

Exhibition rental

We rent out our exhibitions to museums, institutions, galleries and to companies from the private sector. In a collaborative approach between you and the artists, the exhibitions are adapted to your site’s specifics. In addition to the artworks themselves, we will provide you with accompanying publications and extensive press material.

Un visa pour Paris

Sibylle Bergemann and Ute Mahler both traveled to Paris between the 1970s and 1990s on visas from the GDR and took arresting photographs there. Additional images provide insights into the spectacular GDR art exhibition “L’autre Allemagne hors les murs” in the Paris “Villette” in 1990.

CONTINENT – In search of Europe

With this group exhibition, the 23 photographers declare their love for Europe. With it, the collective investigates the present realities of the continent.

OSTKREUZ: Europe without borders

The exhibition presents five current photographic positions that deal with both the present – such as the war in Ukraine and the Corona pandemic – and Europe’s past.

City, Country, Work

The exhibition features 10 photographic positions that collectively reflect social change and the underlying transformation processes to which the city, the countryside, and work are always and inevitably subjected.

La condition humaine

How are we living together and what determines our shared lives? Where do conflicts and challenges arise? How do they affect our common experiences? These are the central questions the OSTKREUZ photographers had in mind while creating works for this exhibition.

OSTZEIT
Stories from a bygone country

Sibylle Bergemann, Ute Mahler, Werner Mahler and Harald Hauswald take us on a journey to the country in which they lived. They show everyday life, work life and people in the GDR. Maurice Weiss’s project about the days after the fall of the Wall builds a bridge to the time of reunification.

Conception of exhibitions

OSTKREUZ built up an extensive archive of images and exhibitions in the field of artistic documentary photography from the 1970s to the present. OSTKREUZ photographers have shed light on the socially relevant topics of the last 50 years. The spectrum of photographic positions ranges from portrait and reportage to artistic and conceptual. For museums and galleries, public and private institutions, we conceive and curate individual exhibitions on commission.

About OSTKREUZ

In 1990, seven East German photographers have founded OSTKREUZ in East Berlin – shortly after the fall of the Wall and before the reunification of Germany. Today, OSTKREUZ is a renowned German photography agency run by its 26 photographers. All members work on commission as well as on free projects.
